Starting Off On Adobe Illustrator - Beginner Tutorials

    Hi Everyone!

For this blog post I'm going to be showcasing 3 tutorials for the software Adobe Illustrator specifically for beginners. I'll also be giving my review and input on the videos, as well as what they're for.

Tutorial 1: Vector basics | Selection & Direct selection tool

In this tutorial, the instructor demonstrates how the selection and direct selection tool can be used to make lines and different shapes. Before he gets into how the tools work, he briefly demonstrates the layers tab and how to view your different layers. Along with that, he also demonstrates how to use the scale tool, rotate tool, how to multiply an object, and how to use anchor points and anchor handles. After watching this tutorial, the selection tool seems super easy to use and is probably the most used tool in Illustrator. However, anchor points and anchor handles do seem a little more challenging, but probably just take some time to perfect and get used to.

Tutorial 2: Fill and Stroke Effects in Adobe Illustrator

This tutorial is all about how to use colors. The instructor demonstrates the difference between stroke and fill, as well as what tools to use to change these colors. He also continues onto to explain stroke align effects and the difference between the alignments. This tutorial definitely was a challenging one to follow and doesn't look like too easy of a process for beginners. While I do think I was able to learn the difference between stroke and fill, as well as how to use them, the more complex things like alignment and some of the effects might be a bit more difficult. Nonetheless, still a great tutorial for someone just starting out on Illustrator.

Tutorial 3: Illustrator Beginner Tutorial: Simple Letter Logos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymBosZVeRc8

Even though this tutorial isn't specific to a certain tool, in it there is a lot of use of circles and gradients. The instructor actually creates a 'P' logo, and do this he uses lots of different variations of circles, constantly resizing them to get the desired shape. Circles are definitely a big part of Illustrator, and after watching this tutorial I definitely can get a better sense of how to use them. The only challenging part of his tutorial definitely was getting the right color for each circle, as well as deleting some of the shapes to get an arc or moon-like shape.

BW to Color

Artist Statement: For my black and white to color photoshop project I decided to use three different types of color schemes; Square, Triad, and Analogous. I really like pinkish-purple colors and I think my favorite scheme in this project was probably the analogous. I was able to utilize the quick selection tool to outline multiple sections of my image including my shirt, shorts, hair, the wall behind me, the reflection on the water, the lights, and as an added bonus, the moon! Having a white shirt on definitely helped the colors on my shirt pop a bit more than the rest of the image since it was taken at night time. Overall, I really enjoyed working on this project and I think photoshop is my new favorite software that we've used so far!

Calligram Project

Calligram Project      For my calligram project I decided to base it off of something I would say represents me, which is music. What you are seeing above is a Treble Clef with music bars flowing off of it, representing what sheet music would look like. I was able to morph the words in a way to look like they're flowing off of the Treble Clef using a tool called the puppet warp. Placing pins on each word using this tool allowed me to morph the words in the way I wanted them to. While I did use the envelope distort tool for some parts, the puppet warp tool was much easier to get the desired shape I wanted. I decided to go with a variety of different fonts in this piece to add an element of creativity, not keeping everything the same. Each different font represents a different sentence, making for easier readability. While things do tend to get a bit trickier to read in the Treble Clef area, using the different fonts helps distinguish between sentence. Inspiration My Letter

Business Cards

Artists Statement: This was my very first time working in InDesign and while its similar to other softwares we've used in class this semester, it also has its differences. My three logos features various different color schemes which I was able to coordinate with the business card colors. I feel as though business cards should be kept simple and not overcomplicated to keep focus on the logo and personal business information. On the front of the cards I included my logo and on some I included elements like diamonds and circles. On the back of the cards I included the same elements as the front but added in my business information. If I was to choose one card to actually use for a business I would choose the black and red color scheme because I think those colors go great together and looks the cleanest. Overall this project was super fun and allowed me to be very creative with my card designs!
